Karate

Karate is a martial art of Japanese origin that deals with attacks through evasive body movements and/or blocking, and counter attacks using kicks, punches and strikes. Restraints and takedowns are also used, but to a lesser extent. People variously practice it as a form of self-defence, a way of keeping healthy and a sport. There are 3 elements, kihon (basics), kata (forms) and kumite (sparring). However, these three elements should not be considered separate, as they constantly overlap and rely on each other. For the upcoming games, kumite consists of men’s 55kg, men’s 60kg, men’s 67kg, men’s 75kg, men’s team, women’s 50kg, women’s 55kg, women’s 61kg, women’s 68kg, women’s +68kg and women’s team. Whereas for Kata, it consists of men’s individual, women’s individual, men’s team and women’s team.
