||What is the Kuala Lumpur 2017 Volunteer Program?
|The Kuala Lumpur 2017 Volunteer Program serves as a platform for Malaysians to participate in, and contribute to, the organization of the Kuala Lumpur 2017, the biennial games of sporting events comprising 11 Southeast Asian countries. The volunteer program comes under the purview of the Malaysian Organizing Committee (MASOC), which is chaired by the Minister of Youth and Sports – YB Brig. Gen. Khairy Jamaluddin.
||How do I qualify as a volunteer?
|If you are a Malaysian aged 16 years and above, you may apply to be a volunteer.
Selection will be based on the following criteria:
Educational background / occupation as well as your area of expertise
Other factors such as strong communication skills, ability to speak in other languages etc.
||Would I be eligible as a Volunteer if I am not a Malaysian?
|Yes. However, applications are only open to citizens of ASEAN and Timor Leste. The terms and conditions for citizens of ASEAN and East Timor to volunteer for Kuala Lumpur 2017 are as follows:
18 years old and above;
Residing, working or studying in Malaysia only;
Conversant in English and/or Bahasa Melayu apart from your mother tongue; and
Possess a passport and work/student visa that is valid from the period the application is made right through till the end of the Kuala Lumpur 2017 Games.
||Can I volunteer if I am under-aged?
- Only applicants aged 16 years and above as at 1 January 2016 will be considered. However an applicant under the age of 18 years as at 1 January 2016, must obtain parental/guardian consent.
- If you are below the stipulated minimum age, you are required to submit a letter of consent, completed and signed by your parents/guardian.
- The letter of consent shall be given to you when you report for the volunteer training session.
||What is expected of me as a volunteer?
|Your contribution as a volunteer is crucial in ensuring the success of the Games. As a volunteer, you are the backbone of the Games. As such, you are required to perform your duties and responsibilities with the highest dedication, discipline, integrity and sincerity. As this event will see many participants from abroad, you will also play the role as an ambassador of MASOC. Therefore, you will be required at all times to be always courteous, helpful and represent the best that Malaysia has to offer to its guests.
||What are my roles and responsibilities as a volunteer? What task/field would I be able to contribute to?
Firstly, each volunteer will be assigned according to the tasks that have been set based on the needs of MASOC. Overall, a total of 13,000 on-field volunteers will be recruited under this program. Details of the tasks will be communicated to you during the volunteer training session. However, among some of the tasks required of volunteers are :
- Liaison Officer
- Opening / Closing Ceremony
- Prize Giving
- Promotion / Marketing
- Venue / Facilities
- Safety / Traffic Control
||How do I register as a volunteer?
It's easy to register as a volunteer. Just follow the steps stated below:

- A confirmation email will be sent after the registration form is submitted
||When is the deadline to submit an application as a volunteer?
The closing date is 30 May 2017.
||What is the selection process? Do I have to attend any interviews?
Applicants will be shortlisted by MASOC based on your completed registration form. You will be notified of the status of your application at www.kualalumpur2017.com.my
||When will I be notified if my application is successful?
Successful applicants will be notified in stages via email. You may also determine the status of your application via www.kualalumpur2017.com.my beginning 30 Novermber 2016 – 30 Jun 2017.
||Do I have to attend any volunteer training?
Yes. Applicants who have been selected are required to attend two mandatory volunteer training sessions organised by the MASOC.
||How many hours does a volunteer need to contribute?
Given that Kuala Lumpur 2017 is a major sporting event, volunteers would be required to serve at least 8 hours per day. However, the exact number of work-hours per day will be determined at a later date, based on the roster that will be provided to you when you attend the training session. In some cases, volunteers may be required to work at night.
||Can I apply for a letter of support from MASOC for temporary relief from work/classes to become a volunteer?
Yes. MASOC will issue a letter of support for unrecorded work leave or temporary release but this is subject to the approval of your employer principal/departmental lecturer/agency/ school / institution of learning.
||Can I select the dates to volunteer?
No. The volunteer schedule will be determined by MASOC and will be provided to you during the training sessions.
||Can I choose to be with a group of volunteers that I am familiar with?
No, as the tasks and responsibilities assigned to you may differ from that of your comrades.
||Where will I be located at?
The location will be dependent on your assigned tasks, but in all likelihood, you will either be at the location of the sport events or the operation centre of the KL 2017 Games :
- Klang Valley
- Nilai , Negeri Sembilan
- Langkawi, Kedah
- Setiu, Terengganu
- Hotels where the contingents are based
- International airport
||Can I choose my preferred location and task?
You may specify the location and task of your choice. However, MASOC reserves the right to amend or change the location and selected task of the volunteers.
||What benefits will I receive as a volunteer?
True to the spirit of volunteerism and the fact that the Kuala Lumpur 2017 is a non-profit sporting event organised to celebrate ASEAN and its people, there is no monetary rewards that will be offered for your services, only the opportunity to be part of this momentus occassion and history. However, we do provide basic essentials, such as below:-
- Daily food allowance
- Official volunteer T-shirt and pants
- Official cap
- Certificate of participation
- Group insurance cover
||Will MASOC provide accommodation and transportation to the Games venue?
MASOC does not provide accommodation for the volunteers. However, MASOC will provide free public transportation via RapidKL for the volunteers during the Kuala Lumpur 2017 Games.
